PIEPS DSP Sport & Pro Transceivers

There has been some online discussion in the US about the mode selection switch of some PIEPS Transcievers. PIEPS have addressed these concerns and engaged in further testing of their DSP Sport and Pro transceivers. After testing they have found that the lock mechanism of the DSP Sport and Pro is not compromised due to a design fault or production issue.

Their findings show no change in switch resistance for used DSP beacons with heavy use. However DSP transceivers that have had their switch overridden (intentionally forced between modes without depressing the lock button), show a reduction in switch resistance which is further reduced after multiple cycles. The reduction in switch resistance due to override is variable, but not as severe as lock/switch mechanisms with visibly damaged lock buttons.

They have recommended that all users inspect their DSP Sport or Pro and get into the habit of regularly inspecting your device (this is actually what all transceiver users should be doing anyway)

How To Inspect Your Transceiver

1.      Physical Check- inspect beacon thoroughly for signs of cracked housing

A. Beacon body

B. Battery door and compartment

C. Slide and lock button

2.       Mechanical check

A. Slider moves smooth?

B. OFF-SEND-SEARCH works? Does it lock in off and in send mode?

C. Buttons: Press the MARK/SCAN button in

3.      Electronics

A. On start-up the beacon should display the software version. See below for more info on updating software.

B. SEND mode do the check symbols appear?

C. Display light check

D. Is the display light active in SEARCH-mode? (dark room, box)

E. Is the transmitting LED active in SEND-mode?

F. Sound is heard when switching on and in SEARCH-mode when receiving a signal?

G. No Error codes should display when the beacon is on (such as E2).

Servicing Your Transceiver.

On top of regular inspection of your transceiver PIEPS recommend regular servicing on your device. When in use your transceiver is subject to extremes of temperature and humidity, and while they are made to a very high standard, all equipment is subject to aging. This is why PIEPS recommend that your device is serviced initially after 3 years of use, then 5 years from date of purchase, then annually.

PIEPS transceivers are serviced by PIEPS in Europe and the UK.

Facewest can perform a thorough diagnostic check on your PIEPS DSP Sport or Pro, details of which can be found here. However if our check highlights a problem with your device you will need to contact PIEPS to see if the device is serviceable.
